The loft we’ve lived in for barely four months has been sold. CK and I looked at a number of apartments locally and they were all either lacking hugely in aesthetics, or completely devoid of necessities like parking, closets etc… The one place I loved was the second and third floor of a renovated Victorian with the most fabulous kitchen but it just wasn’t practical or frankly affordable. So other avenues had to be considered and CK managed to find us a cute three-story townhouse for a really reasonable rent in Lexington.
It took me a long time to agree to this new arrangement. My biggest issue is that I like living in the city — or at least a city like neighborhood. In fact I was a little hysterical about the whole thing until CK rationally pointed out that I was being ridiculous and that we were moving a whopping ten-minute drive from Cambridge and not to Antarctica. So while I can’t roll out of bed ten minutes before work anymore (I suppose I’ll have to push it to 30 now) and when I feel like a bottle of wine I can’t walk out my door and down one block — I will have an on-site gym, swimming pool, central air, a private garage, kitchen cupboards (!) and an enormous balcony for my tomatoes and herbs to grow on. There’s even a complimentary shuttle in the neighborhood that will drop you off at Alewife in the morning and pick you up at night to bring you home.
The management company also offered to paint accent walls if I want. I’m pretty excited about that because I haven’t lived in a place where I was allowed to paint in 5 years. What color do you think I should use in the bedroom and which should I use in the living room? I really like the blue that is the fourth from the left. I’m sure that would work for the bedroom…maybe the creamy yellow for the living room?
One small potential issue is that the door handles are once again “Dexter friendly” so CK and I will undoubtedly be locking ourselves into our bedroom at night, but at least we’ll have a door to lock.
Here’s the thing though…I know NOTHING about Lexington. Is there anything exciting there? Good places to eat? Nice grocery stores perhaps? Please clue us in to what we need to check out in our new suburban hood.

Hello – this is where I live! Email me details!
Those are the kind of door handles we have in the house and they are decidedly “toddler friendly” as well. They’re SO much easier for toddlers to open than the round bulb door handles. BUT — they sell baby proofing attachments for them! Do you have a Babies R Us or similar nearby? Or *shudder* could you venture out to the suburbs to hit one up? ;]
Erin – Ha! We actually did buy some of those for Dexter and then we ended up moving to the loft without doors. I’m going to have to see if I can dig them up. Thanks for the reminder!
congrats! i vote for the green all the way on the left for the bedroom. that’s my favorite bedroom color–very soothing and relaxing. i have been wanting to go to this restaurant: http://www.nourishlexington.com/…
The place sounds great. I hope you’ll love it there. The yellow should be nice in the living room. I can’t judge blue-green. It falls in the color range that makes me think of hospital scrubs. The same goes for any kind of mint blue or green. It’s a personal quirk from having a mom who wore scrubs to work.
I’m not super familiar with Lexington, but they have a cute downtown area with a good place to get manicures/pedicures (MiniLuxe).
You will begin to like Lexington- It’s not the city but it’s close and they have a great little town center. Go to Lexx for dinner or lunch; there is a great new organic place too. Bella Sante Spa is near by and you are a quick drive to the Burlington Mall, the Korean Grocery and Trader Joe’s is up the road on the way to Burlington too. You also have Wilson Farms in your backyard. Lexington is absolutely beautiful in the fall and remember– you are now living in the craddle of American History –the Revolutionary War started there.

OMG, Lexington! You will love Wilson Farms. Part farmers market, part gourmet grocery store, prepared foods, pies, cheeses, etc. Lexington is largely residential but it is a very upscale town so there are some nice restaurants. The Minute Man bike trail is great (runs through Arlington/Lexington), not sure if you have a bike but I know you run. And excuse me, a swimming pool???? When is the next sleepover??? Sounds like you guys made the right decision, can you have a grill finally on the deck?
I think the new place looks great! We’ll just focus on Rebecca’s “cradle of history” and forget about the whole its-in-the-burbs thing. Besides, I bet the ‘burbs in Boston are way more cosmopolitan than the midwestern counterpart. Congrats on finding a new place so soon!
