Erin On the Oregon Trail

Meet the Family

Author Sloane Crosley brought the The Oregon Trail game back to my attention after I read an essay from her book I Was Told There’d Be Cake. In the short story Sloane confesses to her childhood obsession with the The Oregon Trail computer game. She recounts naming characters after hated teachers and purposefully losing the game so that they would die of the dreaded Dysentery. While I don’t recall doing that in elementary school I will embarrassingly admit to locking Sims made to look like evil exes into rooms and “forgetting about them” until they turned into urns. Moving right along…

My Biscuits Are Burning!

You’ve probably heard that an Oregon Trail iPhone app was released this week. I downloaded it last night and hilarity has ensued ever since. I took the liberty of naming my little pioneers after CK and myself. Tagging along with us through the great unknown are also our imaginary children: Lucy, Lola, and Little CK.

Total Klutz
Not surprising, I’m just as much of a klutz in this iPhone app as I am in real life. During the first 5 minutes of play I got a broken arm.

Lola is a Problem Child

My children are also prone to drama. Especially Lola. She’s been kidnapped by an eagle, lost on the trail, and currently is suffering from Dysentery. But what fun would a game of Oregon Trail be if someone didn’t end up with the runs…

Anyone want to take bets on which of my characters is going to kick the bucket first?

I decided to make an album on Flickr for my Oregon Trail Adventures. Feel free to follow along with my faithful path to doom and destruction.

Fluffy White Doggie

This is the commercial that gets me completely teary and causes various “awe-like” sounds to repeatedly come out of my mouth lately. Each time it airs during a television show I instantly stop fast-forwarding and watch it. It’s my dream puppy complete with a “please buy me Erin!” face that I just can’t resist, in a candy pink room, with a girl in cozy pajamas that is so “obviously” me. Let’s be friends puppy! Call me!

The Other Erin

Coralined Erin

Haven’t seen Coraline yet? Why are you waiting?! Grab some 3-D glasses and a king sized package of Junior Mints and get yourself to the theater immediately. In the meantime, maybe you’d like to see what your “other life” would look like? Pink buttons are lovely and all, but remember perfection comes at a cost. [Link via Abbey]

Pink MacBook

Pink MacBook

Last week I saw an image from Confessions of a Shopaholic of Isla Fisher using a pink MacBook. It was a lovely lovely thing. I originally thought it was done via the ridiculously expensive ColorWare process, but then CK pointed out that it was only a pink case. I just had to have one so I ordered it immediately and it arrived this morning. I didn’t think it was possible to love my MacBook anymore than I already do, but this pink Speck cover is seriously the best thing ever! But if pink isn’t your thing it also comes in blue, red, black, purple, green, and orange.

Mimosas and McGriddles

Mcgriddle

Happy Valentine’s Day! This morning CK and I enjoyed a trashy yet delicious breakfast of McGriddles and Mimosas (made with orange juice from McDonald’s). I promise our Valentine’s Day dinner will be much more romantic and holiday appropriate. How will you be celebrating today?

Everyone Has Goals

Princess Set at Gracie Grace

Everyone has goals. My top-priority right now is to buy the entire Princess Set of furniture at Gracie Grace. This is going to involve a lot of fishing and fruit picking, but I think I …. I mean my little pink character… deserves this Marie Antoinette inspired bedroom set.

The Victory Bus

Victory Bus
Look closely at the windows. This is the bus that was stopped in front of us this morning when CK graciously drove me into the office so I wouldn’t break my neck on the trecherously icy sidewalks.

Anne With an E on DVD

Anne DVD

At Costco today I found the Anne of Green Gables DVD collection on sale for $49.99 and into the cart it went. Once upon a time I used to own the VHS tapes but gave them away when we retired our VCR. I absolutely adore these movies. When they used to only come on during PBS pledge drives I fondly remember being glued to the television each time Anne made her annual appearance. To this day I still have a crush on the actor who played Gilbert Blythe. Jonathan Crombie: be still my heart.
